Section of Applied physics

The Department focuses on research activity in the different areas of experimental physics and related technology and guarantees the teaching of specialized courses.

Educational activity

In the context of teaching of physics, especially in Applied physics and Nanotechnology, we provide teaching of the following disciplines:

  • practices oriented to the field of electricity and electronics,
  • practices from the field of nuclear and atomic physics,
  • specialized practices for the disciplines mentioned above,
  • lectures focused on electronics,
  • lectures focused on measurement (metrology, measurement methods, construction of measuring systems),
  • lectures focused on programming and the use of mathematics/computer science in physics and engineering,
  • specialized lectures of physics, and
  • specialized technical/application lectures.

In the context of teaching practices, we maintain and update the equipment of specialized teaching laboratories. At the same time we are the authors of series of study and teaching texts, which we currently prefer in an electronic version that is freely available at the appropriate University website. We do not print any manuals/books at present.

An integral part of educational activity is also a supervision of seminars, Bachelor and diploma theses and support of programs, according to the interest of other students, primarily in the form of consultations and providing access to experimental or program facilities. Additionally, we participate in a wide variety of popularizing events for the public or students of basic or secondary schools.

Research activity

Professional research activity of the Department is focused on several areas:

  • design of measuring systems
    development of digital measurement systems (mainly in the area of Mössbauer spectroscopy), virtual instrumentation, systems for measuring vibration
  • metrology
    theoretical problems of metrology, development of calibration procedures, metrology in the field of nuclear physics
  • image information processing
    use of optical sensors for digital image processing from the physics experiments with the help of geometric, statistical, spectral and detection methods
  • nanotechnology
    use of electron beam lithography, synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials
  • nuclear experiments
    forward nuclear scattering, special nuclear methods, software development
  • development of electronics for experiments in physics
    control systems based on microcontrollers, analog electronics for signal processing, counters, communication units
  • physics measurement and interpretation of the data
    analysis of samples by Mössbauer spectroscopy and microscopy
  • numerical simulation
    simulation of nanostructures and crystallization processes

Currently to the most active team members working in the areas are:

  • doc. Pechoušek, who focuses on the development of measurement systems (Mössbauer spectrometers), application and measurement of piezomaterials and nanomaterials.
  • dr. Procházka, who focuses on the performance and interpretation of the experiments in the field of nuclear physics and construction of instruments for these experiments.

Experts from the Department are also involved into some projects running in collaboration with the other departments of the University and some institutions and companies.
